To say a word is to be salt. But to say a word is like adding
a spoonful of salt to the ocean in order to increase its saltiness.
To say a sentence is the same. Even to fill the world with books
that all speak that word or this paragraph is to let air out of a jar
in order to increase the breathable air.
The ears are plugged up permanently. To say so is all that
needs to be said. Yet something prompts me to say more.
As I survey my heart and weigh the thoughts and actions
of all men and women, I feel that there is a great lack of awareness
as to how corrupt humanity is. It saddens and amazes me.
Should not the meetings of the church be meetings where people,
overcome with grief, guilt and godly sorrow, confess their many sins
to one another.
I can recall a revival in a church begin from the confession of sin.
It was a girl in the assembly, many years ago. She was tortured
by guilt and unashamed to reveal her heart. Many were encouraged
by her frankness and they began to unburden their hearts.
The human heart often carries multitudes of private burdens.
The guilt is unbearable, yet we try to bear it. We deceive ourselves
into thinking that we can somehow do the impossible. But happiness
does not share head space with guilt for very long. Even
“real happiness” will vacate a mind inhabited by a guilty conscience.
Water will stay in the pan for awhile, but eventually the fire will win.
